Description

Create a colorful, whimsical, and magical unicorn cake that will wow any birthday party or celebration — and the best part? It’s ready in under an hour! Perfect for beginners and fun for kids, this cake is soft, vibrant, and topped with dreamy buttercream swirls and a golden horn.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • Gel food coloring (pink, blue, purple, yellow)

For the Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened

  • 5 cups powdered sugar

  • 34 tbsp heavy cream

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Gel food coloring (same colors as above)

Decorations:

  • Unicorn cake topper set (ears, horn, eyelashes)

  • Edible glitter or sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.

  • Mix the Batter
In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla. Gradually add dry ingredients, alternating with milk.

  • Color & Layer
Divide batter evenly into 4 bowls. Add a few drops of different gel food colors to each and mix. Layer each colored batter in the pans randomly or in a rainbow pattern.

  • Bake
Bake for 25–30 minutes. Let cakes cool completely.

  • Make the Frosting
Beat butter until fluffy. Slowly mix in powdered sugar. Add cream and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Divide into separate bowls, tint each with food coloring.

  • Decorate
Stack the cakes with buttercream between layers. Apply a crumb coat. Chill briefly, then apply the final coat. Pipe colorful rosettes for the unicorn mane. Add horn, ears, and draw eyes with black icing or use toppers.

Notes

  • You can use a box cake mix to save even more time.

  • Make the cake layers a day before and frost the next day for convenience.

  • Use a piping tip like 1M or 2D for rosettes.
